Products & Innovation

We believe that every material solution can be sustainable.

Our innovative technology and sustainable material solutions power our customers’ creative, bold ideas. Our portfolio of diverse materials is intrinsic to products in high-growth end markets. Customers and consumers continue to demand high-performance sustainable, circular products. In 2022, we saw our percentage of sustainably advantaged materials increase by 11%. This represents 130.9kT of sustainably advantaged materials, or 6.8% of all our portfolio sales. This demand is an opportunity to bolster our business strategy for growth through innovative products.

Our product development aligns with global trends, such as light-weighting cars while maintaining safety and strength, developing sustainable living and housing, and manufacturing lifesaving medical devices. By utilizing scientific tools like Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) and Product Carbon Footprint (PCF), as well as participating in industry initiatives such as the American Chemistry Council’s (ACC) Responsible Care® program and Operation Clean Sweep®, we can measure the impact of our innovative products and solutions to deliver materials that help us achieve our sustainability goals, as well as those of our customers.

Progress on Our Sustainable Product Portfolio Goals

In 2022, Trinseo continued to exceed this goal, with over 40% of our technology and R&D efforts invested in circular economy solutions. We are evaluating this goal and will make revisions where appropriate.
As a result of our efforts to continue investing in innovative technologies and scale up the industry to meet critical mass, in 2022, we increased our percentage of sustainably advantaged products from the previous year by 11%. Currently, 6.8% of our product portfolio sales, or 130.9kT of materials, are sustainably advantaged.
Trinseo continues to align our product portfolio innovation with the SDGs listed in the coming pages of this report section. As we evaluate this goal moving forward, we will expand language, where appropriate, to align with other areas of our Sustainability Goals.

Our Facilities

Our facilities continue to advance more sustainable handling and processing of materials. In 2022, we received ISCC+ certification for mass balance processes at our plastic plants in Midland, Michigan, U.S., and Hsinchu, Taiwan, in Greater China, allowing the Company to further extend its corporate commitment to sustainably advantaged material solutions. We also continue to work with Synova and Worley on an engineering package for a world-class chemical recycling plant in Europe.

Building & Construction

We commercialized our STYRON X-TECH™ 4660 Polystyrene (PS) Resins for extruded applications. The material allows our customers to reduce material consumption in foam insulation boards because of the material’s cross-linked PS technology. It offers the same reliability and performance as previous resin formulations with a greater sustainability advantage.

Consumer Goods

We continue to partner with companies throughout the value chain to deliver innovative, sustainable materials solutions. In 2022, we collaborated with Holmen Iggesund to launch our first CO2NET™ binders that utilize LCA and PCF data to provide a significantly reduced carbon footprint for the packaging industry. Other partnerships included working with Les 300 Laitiers BIO and CEDAP for recycled polystyrene for food packaging and also with a large consumer electronics manufacturer to increase the sustainable content in their wireless earbud application.

Medical

We strive to develop material solutions that benefit providers and patients alike. Our medical-grade polymers, including our polycarbonate and polymethyl methacrylate resins, enable user-friendly applications across a wide variety of healthcare needs, including diagnostic equipment housings, drug delivery devices, medical wearables, and single- and multiple-use devices.

Mobility

The automotive industry continues to seek solutions to improve electric vehicle battery cycles and lightweight all transportation. Last year, we helped deliver on these through our Memorandum of Understanding with Ferroglobe, increased bio-attributed content for MAGNUM™ acrylonitrile butadiene styrene resins, and developed a flame-retardant additive replacement for potassium perfluorobutane sulfonic salt (C4).
