Responsible Operations

As a leading global solutions company and manufacturer of diverse materials, we are focused on meeting your unique needs through tailored solutions. We are committed to minimizing the impact of our products on human health and the environment throughout all stages of the material's life cycles.

By aligning Trinseo’s mission with four sustainability pillars: products, people, planet, and profit, we can deliver unified strategic direction, investment opportunities, and communications to our business units. Through these endeavors, we continue to build a portfolio of sustainable, innovative chemistries and drive corporate and business strategies in sustainability.

For Trinseo, sustainability is more than what our materials are made from — we believe in our corporate responsibility. As a dedicated member of Operation Clean Sweep®, an industry initiative to limit pellet, flake, and powder loss into the environment, we have successfully achieved no significant or reportable losses of plastic materials from our facilities for several years.

Responsible Operations is just one part of our 2030 Sustainability Goals, which together, will help us achieve a more sustainable future for our company and the communities we serve.

2030 Sustainability Goals

Our Responsible Operations goals have guided our strategic business plans to minimize our impact on the environment.

Trinseo plants implemented programs in 2022 to reduce freshwater use, including the implementation of a recycled water system for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) cool down. Overall, we have reduced our freshwater intake by 21% since our 2017 base year.
In 2022, Trinseo reduced our waste by 27% from the previous year, bringing our total waste to 17,307 MT. This is a significant decrease from 2021, which totaled 23,754 MT, and is due, in part, to waste reduction activities conducted at our facilities.
Trinseo’s landfill disposal decreased by 25% in 2022 when compared to the previous year. This is, in part, due to recycling efforts at our facilities, which recovered over 33,900 MT of materials through reuse efforts, fuel blending, and chemical and metal recovery processes. Overall, the Company has reduced our total waste generation to landfill by 14% since our 2017 base year.
Our facilities each developed a facility risk map with root cause analysis in 2022, which reviewed and assessed operations where a spill or loss of pellets, powder, and flakes may occur. As part of this assessment, improvement and risk minimization plans were developed for those operations identified in the analysis. Additional improvements were also made at the facilities, including the design and construction of shields to prevent pellet spillage during sample collection, as well as repairs and installations to sewer screens that catch granules, which has helped enhance water recovery.
